There have been 49 women executed in the United States since 1900 -- including 10 since 1976.
According to the Death Penalty Information Center, Florida ranks second only to North Carolina in the number of women sentenced to death since 1973, with the penalty imposed on 15 women. North Carolina has imposed the sentence on 16 women.
And while the majority of states imposing the death penalty (on men or women) are in the south, California ranks third in the number of women sentenced to die, followed by Texas, Ohio, Alabama, Illinois, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Georgia.
As of July 1, 2002, there were 52 women on death row, and women make up 1.4 percent of the total death row population of about 3,718 inmates. Women make up less than 0.1 percent of the approximately 50,000 women in prisons in the United States, according to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund "Death Row USA" report dated July 1.
Most states have changed the method of execution from hanging (in the early 20th century) to electrocution or the gas chamber and more recently to lethal injection, although a woman, Lynda Lyon Block, was executed in Alabama by electrocution as recently as May 2002.
